The drive between Al Khobar, Dammam and Dhahran is flat, fast and relentless. That favours a sedan: lower centre of gravity, less frontal area, and fuel consumption that stays reasonable when you are covering 60 km before breakfast.
Where the SUV wins
Ground clearance matters more than buyers expect. Unpaved compound entrances, kerb-height ramps and the occasional trip toward the desert edge all reward a taller car. Families carrying three rows regularly will not be talked out of an SUV, and they should not be.
- Mostly highway, one or two occupants: a sedan is cheaper to run and quieter at 120 km/h.
- Three rows needed more than twice a week: go straight to a seven-seat SUV.
- Regular desert trips: you need four-wheel drive, not all-wheel drive.
- Tight parking in older districts: measure the space before committing to a full-size SUV.
The cost nobody budgets for
Tyres. A full-size SUV on 22-inch wheels will cost roughly double a sedan to re-shoe, and Eastern Province heat is hard on rubber. Factor one full set into your first three years of ownership.
Buy for the drive you make every week, not the trip you take twice a year.
